Our Story
Chi Yatai was established in December of 2019 as a dream fulfilled primarily to serve the Chicago area through food, dessert, and bubble tea. Before we opened, we spent a long time creating all authentic recipes for our food, as well as unique and all original bubble tea offerings.
To explain our restaurant name, "Chi" means Christ in Greek [pronounced kai]; "Chi" is also short for Chicago and Chinatown. A "Yatai" is a street food stand in Japan. Our mascot is Tak the Baby Octopus Chef, designed by John and Mier, to highlight our made-from-scratch Takoyaki and infuse a fun, playful cuteness into the Chi Yatai customer experience.
In closing, John and Mier, with the help of a close friend's recipes from the streets of Osaka, Japan, desire to run the restaurant to honor the Lord and bless every customer with kindness, warmth, hospitality, and love. Chi Yatai was established to serve authentic Japanese Street Fare--made-from-scratch Takoyaki, Katsu Sando, Chicken Karaage, and Donburi made with Japan's #1-rated Koshihikari rice--as well as Organic Bubble Tea. We invite you to taste the difference at Chinatown's only restaurant using the finest hormone-free, antibiotic-free organic milk in all our bubble tea drinks. We hope you'll love that we use all-natural pure cane sugar, non-GMO, all-natural brown sugar, and fresh, all-natural ingredients.
